Guided Walking Safaris & Bush Walks in Masai Mara, Kenya
Going on a bush walking safari is like stepping into a real-life adventure book. It’s a chance to take a leisurely stroll through a wildlife conservation area, guided by experts, to see wild animals up close and personal without the barrier of a vehicle.
In the Masai Mara, there are two types of nature walks you can enjoy. The first takes place within the camp, lasting about 45 minutes to an hour, and costs between £40 to £60 per person. The second option is a bit more adventurous, taking you outside the main reserve for about 2.5 to 3 hours, covering a distance of 9 to 15 kilometers. This longer walk, priced between £70 to £115 per person, includes a packed breakfast or lunch and game drives to and from the walking safari spot. Morning walking safari and late afternoon walking safaris are preferable because the sun is not too hot.
Most national parks in Kenya, except for Hells Gate National Park, don’t allow walking inside their boundaries. The same rules apply to the main Masai Mara National Reserve. However, private conservancies around the reserve might offer well-organized and supervised walking safaris. Camps and lodges within the reserve often provide shorter nature walks, about an hour long, near the safari property.

Even with safety measures in place, nature walks and bush walks, as they’re often called, are incredibly rewarding. Being on foot allows you to notice so much more in the bush, making the experience more sensory and immersive.

Depending on where you go for your nature walk, you might see lots of wildlife and a rich variety of birds, plants, and other natural wonders. Experienced guides, often local Maasai who know the region inside out, lead these walks.

While walking safaris are generally safe, they do come with some risks. Remember, you’re in the territory of local wildlife, like zebras, elephants, buffaloes, lions, leopards, and cheetahs. Being on foot means you’re on equal footing with these majestic creatures, making the experience thrilling and unforgettable.
