Tira - A Rare Polka- Dot Zebra Photographed in Masai Mara
In September 2019, the Masai Mara became the talk of the world when a rare polka dot zebra was photographed. This uniquely melanistic zebra foal, named Tira by a Maasai guide, captured everyone’s attention. Unlike typical zebras with their iconic stripes, Tira sports an unusual pattern of polka dots! Zebra stripes are as unique as fingerprints, but Tira’s odd coloration is likely the first of its kind in the Masai Mara.
This rare zebra foal’s amazing dark colour results from a genetic abnormality affecting melanin levels, giving it a chocolate brown coat with white polka dots. The foal also has a short, hairless tail, unlike the regular bushy tail of other zebras. Unfortunately, such distinctive appearances can make them easy targets for predators like lions. Tira’s remarkable markings and rather amazing dark colour make it a truly special sight in the wild!
